‘Emergency Food Packages’ Project in August

Over 680 000 people in NSW go hungry every year. Here Foodbank talks food waste and their latest project to combat poverty.

For a short time not-for-profit Foodbank NSW are running their ‘Emergency Food Packs’ project, aiming to raise $25, 000 by the end of August. With an initial goal of 750 packs to be sent out to individuals and families in need, this should provide 10 500 meals to those experiencing extreme hardship. The average size pack will supply one adult and two children with 7 square meals, making it easier to get through to the end of winter.

Despite almost two decades of economic growth, nearly a quarter of Australians still live in low economic households and 10% live in actual poverty. Though we may not perceive it, groups other than the homeless, elderly and women fleeing violence are in need of help. Many families are struggling each day, and are having to rely on the services of food-relief programs to get by. This problem is beginning to effect more and more Australians each day to the point of crisis.

Foodbank NSW helps these people in crisis, by rescuing 4 million kilos of food from being dumped every year and giving it back to the community. They currently supply over 470 charities, ranging from the Salvos to Wayside Chapel, with much needed food resources.

For just $35 you can help ensure that less people have to go without this basic need each day.

To find out more about how you can help to relieve the hunger of Australians doing it tough over the next month, head to Foodbank.
